I’ll be teaching Sound as Object: Media, Space (IIMC-560) this fall at California Institute of the Arts.
We’ll be creating sounds from the simplest of elements and working as a group to develop them into more complex creations. We’ll start completely analog—no electronics whatsoever—and slowly introduce motors/actuators, field recording, contact mics, and various amplification methods. Themes throughout the semester will be 1) exploring all aspects of a sound source and 2) focusing on keeping things simple (but allowing combinations that create complexity) and 3) collaborative processes. The final project will consist of moving past the experimentation phase of exploring sound and developing a collaborative sound installation. This class is open to the Institute and is a part of the Center for Integrated Media at CalArts.
